Controlled Modulus Column (CMC) Rigid Inclusions as Alternative Foundation Solution for Bunker Building
Bunker building projects pose unique challenges in terms of foundation and ground improvement due to their critical structural and functional requirements.
Unlike typical construction projects, bunkers must withstand extreme loads, resist ground movements, and ensure long-term durability and protection. These needs drive the selection of advanced foundation techniques and ground improvement services to achieve optimal stability and performance.
Menard’s project in Phnom Penh City, Cambodia exemplifies these requirements. A 235 square meter bunker building is being constructed with a load-bearing capacity ranging from 14 tons/m² to 17 tons/m².
To support the concrete slab under such significant loads, the Controlled Modulus Column (CMC) technique was chosen as an alternative foundation method. The CMCs were installed in a grid pattern beneath the slab, with additional columns strategically placed under the building’s columns, ensuring enhanced load distribution and structural integrity.
Controlled Modulus Columns (CMC) or rigid inclusions are ideal for bunker projects due to their ability to significantly improve the load-bearing capacity of weak soils. By reinforcing the soil, CMCs reduce settlement risks and provide a stable foundation that can endure the extreme demands of a bunker. This technique is particularly beneficial in areas with problematic soil conditions, where traditional deep or semi-deep foundations might not be feasible or cost-effective.
As Phnom Penh continues to develop, the use of advanced ground improvement services like CMC rigid inclusions will play a vital role in supporting the city’s infrastructure growth. Menard remains committed to delivering cutting-edge solutions for complex geotechnical challenges, paving the way for safer and more resilient constructions.
