Kulonprogo suddenly became a highly reputable district after the Central Government chose this district to build one of the largest international airports in Indonesia. The first stone laying of the construction of New Yogyakarta International Airport (NYIA) by the President of Indonesia Joko Widodo in Glagah village, Temon, Kulonprogo on Friday, 21 January 2017.
Project Overview
The New Yogyakarta International Airport was officially opened on 28 August 2020. Menard Asia as a sub-contractor of PT. PP (Persero) Tbk has carried out ground improvement for the runway and taxiway in New Yogyakarta International Airport which owned by PT. Angkasa Pura 1.
The airport was built on the ground which is predominantly loose sand and hence, sand compaction work by means of Dynamic Compaction was performed to densify the loose sand with thickness of up to 8 m to ensure that the new airport is safe against liquefaction.
Ground Condition
The location of new Yogyakarta is within the active seismic zone which made the loose sand prone to liquefaction. The Magnitude of a design earthquake (DEQ) is 7.5 with a PGA of 0.4g; the factor of safety against liquefaction (SF) is set to be 1.3. Because of the ground condition in NYIA Project was predominantly a loose sand layer with a thickness ranging from 4 m to 8 m, underlain by a dense sand layer. The SPT N-value of the top 8 m sand layer varies from 2 to 12.
Menard Solution
Due to the nature of the ground condition, there is a need in compacting the loose sand at a depth of 4 m to 8 m into a denser state to ensure that the new airport is safe against liquefaction. DC is found to be the most effective solution for this job. The total surface treated is 421,169 m² (for the Runway and Taxiway)
Menard Asia completed the project with excellent results and satisfied the client’s requirements. This project became an addition to Menard Asia’s array of airport projects in the SEA region, including Soekarno Hatta International Airport, Ngurah Rai International Airport, and Changi International Airport.
