Ground Improvement for the Serang Panimbang Toll Road Project Phase 3 Carried Out by Menard Geosystems Indonesia
The construction of toll roads is a critical infrastructure project aimed at enhancing connectivity and facilitating economic growth in a region. However, road construction often faces complex challenges, especially related to unstable soil conditions. This is why soil improvement is crucial to ensuring the success of toll road construction projects.
One of the toll road projects currently underway in Indonesia, expected to be completed by 2024, is the construction of the Serang-Panimbang Toll Road which is currently in the next stage by connecting the Rangkasbitung area to Panimbang. This toll road will traverse three regencies and connect the Tanjung Lesung Special Economic Zone and the Ujung Kulon National Park.
The construction area of the Serang-Panimbang Toll Road is mostly situated on soft clay soil, requiring soil reinforcement to reduce ground settlement caused by road construction during operational lifetime. Therefore, PT Adhi Karya (Persero) Tbk, as one of the main contractors for the Serang-Panimbang Toll Road Package 3 project, has partnered with Menard Geosystem as a specialist in soil improvement for this project.
In the scope of this project, Menard installed Rigid Inclusions or Controlled Modulus Columns (CMC) to improve soil bearing capacity. The toll road is constructed with additional fill embankment. Additionally, the fabrication and installation of steel reinforcement in the CMC was also carried out to improve the CMC’s ability to maintain soil stability.
The soil along the section 3 of the Serang-Panimbang toll road is an area previously used for agriculture, with clay soil that is highly saturated with water and has very low bearing capacity. The depth of the clay soil varies from 14 to 27 meters. With the addition of embankment soil and the toll road load above it, soil improvement is required in several areas of toll road construction.
The use of CMC is considered highly suitable because it functions to increase soil bearing capacity and stability in a short time and more cost-efficiently compared to other methods. With CMC, soil improvement for toll road construction becomes more efficient, faster, and successfully addresses complex challenges related to soil conditions.
Soil improvement not only ensures the success of toll road projects but also serves as a strategic step in supporting economic growth and the well-being of surrounding communities.
