Menard Asia in Cambodia has completed the ground improvement project for Light-Frame Residential and Dormitory (LFRD) School building using Controlled Modulus Column (CMC).

Project Overview

Menard Cambodia – MGS Soil Treatment completed a ground improvement project for a new 3-story Light-Frame Residential and Dormitory (LFRD) school building, spanning approximately 620 m². The project presented significant geotechnical challenges due to the weak properties of the subsoil at the planned construction site. Additionally, the building is constructed next to the existing school building. Due to this circumstances, it is essential to carefully manage construction to ensure safety and minimize disruption to ongoing activities.

Ground Condition

The subsoil beneath the new construction was identified as having weak geotechnical properties, posing stability risks to the building. Traditionally, such conditions would necessitate deep foundation systems, which, while effective, are often costly and time-consuming.

Solution: Controlled Modulus Columns (CMC)

Menard proposed the use of Controlled Modulus Columns (CMC), with a 320 mm diameter, combined with a shallow foundation system. This solution provides cost savings while aligning with the project timeline and minimizing disruption to the adjacent building.

The CMCs, designed to support an SLS load of 37T, were installed to the required depth to reinforce the weak subsoil, allowing for a stable and secure base for the shallow foundation system. This method effectively addressed the geotechnical challenges and ensured the stability of the building to be constructed on reinforced ground.
