Project Overview

Menard Cambodia – MGS Soil Treatment successfully completed a ground improvement project at the Luang Mae Hospital bunker in Phnom Penh City, Cambodia, using Controlled Modulus Columns (CMC) Rigid Inclusions. This project was critical to providing the necessary stability and load-bearing capacity required for the unique demands of a bunker building.

Ground Condition

Bunker buildings present unique challenges in terms of foundation and ground improvement due to their critical structural and functional requirements. These structures must withstand extreme loads, resist ground movements, and ensure long-term durability and protection. This 235-square-meter building is being constructed with a thick concrete slab designed to support loads between 14 ton/m² and 17 ton/m².

Solution: Controlled Modulus Columns (CMC)

To address these challenges, Controlled Modulus Columns (CMC) were chosen as an alternative foundation technique. The CMCs were installed in a grid pattern beneath the slab, with two additional columns specifically located under the building's columns. This configuration ensured enhanced load distribution and structural integrity, effectively supporting the load-bearing capacity up to 17 tons/m².

By reinforcing the soil, CMCs reduce settlement risks and provide a stable foundation that can endure the extreme demands of a bunker. This technique is particularly beneficial in areas with problematic soil conditions where traditional deep or semi-deep foundations might not be feasible or cost-effective.
