Project Overview
After the initial ground improvement using consolidation methods revealed cracks along the embankment perimeter, Menard was tasked with rectifying the situation and ensuring a long-term stable solution. Utilizing the Controlled Modulus Column (CMC) method, Menard successfully reinforced the soil across the 26,000 m² project site, enhancing its stability to support critical operations.
Soil Conditions
During the construction process, several cracks were discovered along the perimeter of the embankment, particularly after the site was filled to its planned elevation. This indicated that the consolidation methods used previously were insufficient to handle the load from the heavy machinery that the nickel smelter would require. The proximity of the project to a mangrove forest and coastal area further complicated the ground conditions, as high tides affected the stability of the platform.
Menard Asia’s Ground Improvement Solution: Controlled Modulus Column (CMC)
After conducting a technical review and soil investigation, Menard Indonesia determined that Controlled Modulus Columns (CMC) were the optimal solution for stabilizing the site. CMC columns, 32 cm in diameter and spaced 1.5 meters apart, were installed at varying depths depending on the presence of hard soil layers. In some zones, rebar was incorporated into the CMC installations to provide additional resistance to lateral forces, particularly on the embankment slopes.
One of the key challenges was the proximity to the coastal area, where rising sea levels during high tide threatened the stability of the platform. To counter this, Menard elevated the platform to ensure its height was above the high tide level, protecting the work area from potential flooding. By implementing these measures, Menard was able to provide a stable, long-lasting foundation for the nickel smelter, ensuring the site was ready for industrial operations.
